Keep the Summer Heat at Bay

Hot summer days are inevitable, and it’s very easy to become dehydrated from heat exposure. Most people think that they drink enough water each day, but the fact is that they probably don’t. Two liters of water a day (more than half of a gallon) might seem like enough for a full water detoxification and cleanse process, but it’s actually how much water many doctors recommend that people drink on a daily basis to replace fluids lost through sweating and urination. And if you're out in the heat for an extended length of time, you may well need more than that!

On the flip side, however, a new study out this summer by Margaret McCartney, a Scottish doctor, suggests that drinking eight glasses of water may be too much for some people. The Mayo Clinic recommends drinking enough fluids so that you never feel thirsty, and produce about six cups of "colorless or slightly yellow urine per day."

Many people rely on electrolyte drinks to replenish what they lose through heat exposure and sweating. While these can be helpful, they can also have sugars and unnatural additives. A good rule of thumb is that if your drink tastes sweet, check to see whether it has high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners added to it in order to make it taste “more flavorful.” New products have entered the market that are naturally sweetened, and also low or reduced calorie. A win-win for those who need to reduce sugar in their diet.

The best option under most circumstances to hydrate your body is plain old water. However, you might not like the taste of your tap water or be concerned about issues such as fluoride or water alkalinity. At the same time, buying bottled water is expensive and uses plastic containers that simply aren’t good for the environment. It can leave you with a seemingly impossible choice to make.

However, there is one answer that solves all of your problems: using water filters for your home that help remove nasty sediments and other particles that make your tap water taste foul. These filters can be installed in your house easily, giving you a lifetime of fresh, reliable drinking water that will taste great and keep you and your family healthy.
